1951 — Mercedes-Benz 220 (W187) Mercedes Benz puzzle for kids and adults. Some facts. Mercedes-Benz W187 is a luxury car produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1951 to 1955. Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in April 1951, the W187 was powered by the M180 straight six-cylinder single overhead camshaft and was available in sedan, coupe and convertible body styles, designated the 220 model.[1] Despite its pre-World War II reputation for luxury automobiles, Mercedes-Benz produced only passenger cars with a four-cylinder engine in the immediate post-war years. The Mercedes-Benz 220 W187 and the flagship W186 Mercedes-Benz 300 Adenauer, introduced together in 1951, were the first Mercedes to again feature six-cylinder engines. Engines All 220s used the newly developed 2195cc M180 six-cylinder engine producing 80 hp. according to DIN (86 SAE) (59 kW). In contrast to the rather old-fashioned appearance of the car's body, the new engines attracted a lot of attention from the automotive press, becoming the first new engine to be introduced by Mercedes-Benz in more than ten years. The valves were actuated by short rocker arms from the overhead camshaft. The engine was unusual in Europe at the time in that it had over-square cylinder dimensions with a bore of 80.0 mm and a stroke of only 72.8 mm, facilitating the development of an efficient reverse-flow cylinder head. The manufacturer claimed a top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph) for sedans and 145 km/h (90 mph) for convertibles, which was faster than the 52 hp 170S Convertible. (38 kW), which replaced the convertible version of the W187 and from which its body was borrowed. The new six-cylinder engine, which was repeatedly enlarged and upgraded over the years, became the basis for a long line of six-cylinder engines powering major Mercedes-Benz models, including a six-cylinder version of the early S-Class models of the 1970s. Because of the extra power of what was by today's standards a heavy car, the W187 was equipped with double drum brakes. Since the manufacturer was going to exclude sedan cars from the list in May 1954, in April 1954 the Cabriolet A and its coupe derivative were equipped with a new high-compression engine producing 85 hp. (63 kW), which was developed for the soon to be announced Mercedes-Benz W180 with a Pontoon body. Production of these faster sports versions of the W187 continued for another year. The 220 sedan was replaced by the W105/W180 line in 1953. Production of the coupe and convertible continued until August 1955. Production The sedan was discontinued in May 1954; production of the Cabriolet A and Coupé models continued for another 15 months, until August 1955. The body of the W187 saloon was exactly replicated from the 1938 Mercedes-Benz W153 and, despite the modern engine that powered it, already on the day of its appearance seemed old-fashioned to many observers. Two years earlier, in 1949, Borgward Hansa noted that car designs had changed since the 1930s, and the manufacturer's own 1953 W120 confirmed that "modern" European cars were following the North American trend towards lower, wider bodies. This has been seen as an explanation for the unusually short production cycle of the W187 itself - just over three years for the saloon and less than five years for the longest-lasting convertible model. The W187 was immediately replaced by the six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz 220a (W180) with a Pontoon body. When the convertible was discontinued in 1955, there was no immediate successor. However, just over a year later the all-new Mercedes-Benz 220S Cabriolet and Coupé appeared in July and October 1956 respectively. As with the saloon on which they were based, the new convertible and coupe used a modern pontoon-style body.
