Why We Switched to the Cummins X15 (And Cut Our Battery Pack in Half)
We break down why we moved from the Scania DC09 to the Cummins X15 as the generator engine in our hybrid semi-truck powertrain. We compare weight, horsepower, and real-world performance so you can see exactly what changes for loggers, heavy haulers, and anyone working in extreme vocational applications. The X15 adds about 800 lb over the Scania, but it lets us nearly double generator horsepower from roughly 350 hp to around 600 hp, which massively improves our ability to recharge the battery pack on long pulls and heavy grades. Because we can now charge the batteries faster, we were able to downsize from six batteries to the equivalent of about three, cutting weight and cost while still maintaining the power needed for 200‑ton gross loads. We also talk about how regen on downhill logging roads, battery sizing for worst-case scenarios, and engine braking all come together to make this hybrid system safer and more efficient in the real world.
