Chevrolet spent 60 years trying to make a mid-engine Corvette. And at one point, they almost made it a rotary. Let me explain. A Belgian engineer named Zora Arkus-Duntov builds the first mid-engine Corvette prototype. He's convinced it's the future. GM says no. The Timeline:1959 — CERV I: Zora's first attempt. Open-wheel, mid-engine, single-seater. GM says no.1964 — CERV II: He tries again with a more refined prototype. GM says no.1968 — XP-880 Astro II: A stunning show car that looked production-ready. GM says no.1970 — XP-882: Surprise debut at the New York Auto Show. Crowds go wild. GM still says no.The Rotary Detour:In the early '70s, GM got obsessed with the Wankel rotary engine. They told Zora — fine, you can have your mid-engine Corvette. But it has to be rotary powered. So they built two versions: XP-897 GT (Two-Rotor Corvette): Mid-engine, rotary powered, wild styling Four-Rotor Corvette: Even more ambitious, eventually became the Aerovette Neither made it to production. The rotary program was eventually killed due to emissions concerns and the 1973 oil crisis. The Long Wait:1976 — Aerovette: Actually approved for production. Then cancelled when new GM leadership took over.1986 — Corvette Indy: A hypercar concept loaded with advanced tech. Teased a mid-engine future. Never built.1990 — CERV III: The closest one yet to production reality. Featured all-wheel drive and 650 horsepower. Still didn't make it.Zora's Dream:Zora Arkus-Duntov retired in 1975 after 23 years at GM. He spent his entire career pushing for a mid-engine Corvette. He died in 1996 — still waiting. The C8 Corvette finally launched in 2020. Sixty years after the first prototype. Zora's dream realized. Just a little late. Why It Took So Long:Cost. Politics. Leadership changes. Every time a mid-engine Corvette got close to production, something killed it. New executives. New priorities. Budget cuts. The front-engine Corvette kept selling, so GM kept asking — why change? It took six decades, nine major prototypes, and an engineer who never gave up. The mid-engine Corvette is finally here.#Corvette #C8 #MidEngine #ChevyCorvette #Chevrolet #ZoraArkusDuntov #CorvetteHistory #CERV #Aerovette #RotaryEngine #Wankel #CarHistory #Automotive #SportsCar #AmericanMuscle #Moneyshift #Shorts #GMHistor
