Luxury supercar manufacturer McLaren Automotive will shortly commence production of the windscreen version of its Elva roadster. Designed for customers who prefer to have a physical screen rather than the barrier of air provided by the Active Air Management System (AAMS), as well as to meet local legal requirements in some states in the USA, the windscreen variant – which will be among the rarest of McLarens – is revealed today in full for the first time, with images of the prototype car. While having had its own engineering programme to optimise aerodynamic and dynamic performance, the windscreen Elva shares all of the ethos and performance of the original car: neither has a roof, side windows or rear screen, which when combined with a dry lightest weight of less than 1300kg and a mid-mounted, 815PS, twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, delivers the ultimate in driver exhilaration. The screenless Elva is McLaren Automotive’s lightest-ever road car and the target for the windscreen version is only 20kg heavier, even with the inclusion of electronically synchronised rain-sensing wipers, washer jets and sun visors, as well of course as the heated glass windscreen within a carbon fibre surround. The Active Air Management System (AAMS) is deleted as it has no role to play in the windscreen car. About Car

A car, or an automobile, is a motor vehicle with wheels. Most definitions of cars state that they run primarily on roads, seat 1-8 people, have four wheels, and mainly transport people rather than cargo. There are over 1.6 billion cars in use worldwide as of 2025. The French inventor Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built the first steam-powered road vehicle in 1769, while the Swiss inventor François Isaac de Rivaz designed and constructed the first internal combustion-powered automobile in 1808. The mode...

About This Footage

The McLaren ELVA's latest iteration has been unveiled in this clip, showcasing the luxury supercar manufacturer's commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. The footage provides an exclusive first look at the windscreen version of the roadster, which is set to enter production soon.

One of the most striking aspects of this prototype is its adherence to the original Elva's ethos and performance characteristics. Despite having a physical screen, the windscreen variant retains the same aerodynamic and dynamic prowess as its roofless counterpart. This is no small feat, considering the significant weight increase that typically accompanies the addition of glass components.

At just 20kg heavier than the screenless ElVA, this new iteration is remarkably svelte, especially when you consider the inclusion of features like rain-sensing wipers, washer jets, and sun visors. The use of a carbon fibre surround for the windscreen is also noteworthy, as it helps to minimize weight gain while maintaining structural integrity.

The ELVA's powertrain remains unchanged, with its mid-mounted, 815PS twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine delivering the kind of driver exhilaration that McLaren enthusiasts have come to expect from this marque. With a dry weight of less than 1300kg, the windscreen ElVA is still an extremely lightweight road car, making it all the more impressive when you consider its performance capabilities.

What's particularly interesting about this prototype is its intended market appeal. By offering a physical screen option for customers who prefer it, McLaren is catering to those who may have been deterred by the Active Air Management System (AAMS) in the original ElVA. This move also addresses local legal requirements in certain states within the USA, where windshields are mandatory.

The fact that this windscreen variant will be among the rarest of McLarens only adds to its allure. For those who value exclusivity and performance above all else, the ELVA's windscreen version promises to deliver a truly unique driving experience.

As we watch this prototype in action, it's clear that McLaren Automotive has struck an impressive balance between innovation and tradition. By retaining the original ElVA's spirit while incorporating practical features like a windscreen, the manufacturer is pushing the boundaries of what's possible in high-performance road cars. With its exceptional powertrain, razor-sharp handling, and sleek design, the ELVA's windscreen variant is sure to turn heads on the roads ahead.
