New Ferrari 12Cilindri Track Test: Spider vs Coupe With Tiff Needell

Vicki Butler-Henderson and Tiff Needell track test the Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider and Coupe on a cold, greasy Llandow Circuit. Can Ferrari’s latest V12 grand tourer replace the 812 Superfast? Prices started at around £340,000 at the time of filming, before options. Both versions use a naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 producing 830 hp without hybrid assistance. It revs to 9,500 rpm and delivers 0-62 mph in 2.9 seconds. WHAT’S IMPRESSIVE • Naturally aspirated V12 power with a 9,500 rpm redline • Immediate turn-in and accurate, confidence-inspiring steering • Fast eight-speed gearbox and superb fixed paddles • Effective bumpy-road mode and genuine grand touring comfort WHAT TO CONSIDER • Its width and turning circle can make road driving and parking difficult • The V12 sounds more muted inside than Vicki expected • The low central screen and haptic steering-wheel controls frustrate • Its power, size and long wheelbase make smooth slides difficult on a tight track • The tested Coupe costs £517,000 once its options are added PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING The V12 produces 30 hp more than the standard 812 Superfast. Electronic torque shaping alters its delivery according to the selected gear and engine speed, while active aerodynamic flaps can produce up to 50 kg of downforce at 155 mph. Both presenters praise the steering and composure. Race mode contains the power remarkably well, but switching everything off shows how quickly 830 hp can overwhelm the rear tyres. Vicki finds it smarter and more composed than the looser, more aggressive 812 Superfast, although not necessarily more exciting. SPIDER OR COUPE? The Spider is 60 kg heavier and its roof opens in 14 seconds at up to 28 mph. The Coupe provides 270 litres of boot space, enough for two small suitcases, while the Spider adds open-air V12 drama. Neither presenter declares a simple winner. WHEELS AND TYRES The 21-inch forged wheels wear Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 tyres developed with Ferrari for road and track use. Their K1 marking identifies the Ferrari-specific fitment. Pilot Alpin 5 winter tyres are also approved. RIVALS The Aston Martin Vanquish and Volante are the closest V12 GT rivals, while the hybrid Lamborghini Revuelto takes a very different approach. VICKI AND TIFF’S VERDICTS The Ferrari 12Cilindri combines huge performance with refinement and genuine GT ability. Its size, controls and restrained cabin sound divide opinion, but its V12, sharp steering and rear-wheel-drive balance ensure it still feels special.
