The Mercedes Benz W125 Rekordwagen Hit 269 MPH 80 Years Ago

Mercedes-Benz W125

The official speed was a two-route normal of 268.9 mph. The auto was a vigorously adjusted Mercedes-Benz W125 Grand Prix racer; the driver was the 1935 and 1937 European drivers' champion who might secure an extra title in 1938. That unique W125 Rekordwagen is currently on static show at the Mercedes processing plant exhibition hall in Stuttgart, however 80 years prior, its V-12 motor rushed a courageous man down a stretch of the A5 superhighway where Germans today drive to Frankfurt. The Rekordwagen is at the exhibition hall's end, managed an account along a divider, where it drives a parade of test racers. Were it not for that commonplace star painted on its exposed aluminum body, the Rekordwagen may have a place with the UFO historical center in Roswell, New Mexico. Underneath is a W125 Silver Arrow, a similar open-wheel Mercedes race auto in which Caracciola secured the 1937 European Grand Prix title. The specs are incredible: a twin-supercharged 5.6-liter V-12 with 725 strength, a radiator submerged in 18 cubic feet of ice, and the capacity to eat a whole mile in only 13.4 seconds. On the morning of January 28, 1938, Caracciola and his group were under extreme strain to perform. Three months sooner, the organization had guaranteed that the auto would peak 249 mph, however Caracciola cautioned that the backside felt too light. Afterward, with lead ballasting the wheels, the motor fizzled. A couple of days prior, the front end was lifting. In November 1936, the Mercedes quit after a supercharger kicked the bucket. Multi month before that, it was gearbox disappointment. In any case, this being Mercedes—and with the Nazi Party regulating these record endeavors to demonstrate German predominance on its fresh out of the plastic new expressway—disappointment was unsatisfactory.
