The 550 is the thinking person's Ferrari: the car that brought the front-engine V12 grand tourer back after roughly two decades of mid-engined flagships, and one of the last great gated manuals. This is the 550 Maranello coupe — not the 575M that replaced it in 2002, not the 456 2+2, not the open Barchetta, and not the mid-engined 512 TR it succeeded.
SPECS: A 5,474cc four-cam 48-valve naturally aspirated V12 (the F133 A) with Bosch Motronic, quoted at roughly 478-485 hp and about 568 Nm — smooth low down, alive above 4,000 — through a SIX-SPEED GATED MANUAL, the only transmission offered for the entire run. 0-60 in about 4.3 seconds. Ferrari quoted 199 mph, a number chosen to make a statement. Aluminium body (resists rust), steel brakes at roughly £500-£1,000 a rotor. 3,083 coupes built, plus 448 Barchettas.
WATCH OUT: Cambelt every three years — but the engine does NOT come out for it, unlike its mid-engined siblings. The gearbox is the big one: 2nd and 3rd synchros are known weak points, some early cars notchy into 1st/3rd/5th, and rebuilds are brutal, so confirm every shift. Clutches last 40-50K miles; steering racks about 30K. A/C compressor seal leaks, oil leaks (cam covers, front cam seals, rear main), front crank pulley separation, windscreen delamination. The tactile plastics go sticky under UV, leather shrinks, dash binnacles crack. About 9.6 US mpg.
PRICING: 2026: roughly $70,000 to over $200,000. It was ~$200-230K new, fell under $75,000 by 2012, then recovered hard once gated manuals went extinct.
Verdict: BUY — buy the thickest service history in the room, not the shiniest paint.
