EN: The Retromobil Club Romania organized an exhibition of functional Oltcit vehicles on June 14, 2025, on Calea Victoriei in Bucharest. Attendees could admire at the event, from an Oltcit from 1982, the year of the first production batch, to an Oltcit that was used as a prop in the film 'Liberty' by Tudor Giurgiu. For those who remembered them on the streets of the homeland, it was a moment of nostalgia, for the young, a moment of curiosity, and for those who drove an Oltcit, a moment to reminisce about both good and bad memories with this special vehicle built in Romania. For those who do not know what Oltcit is, here is a brief history: Oltcit is a Romanian car made under license from Citroën. The Citroën platform was called Prototype Y and was an abandoned project by the French manufacturer after merging with Peugeot. The project was requested by the Romanian side, which produced the first vehicle in 1981, with mass production starting in 1982. Oltcit did not remain just a simple licensed car, it underwent constant modifications and improvements that later distinguished it from the original French model. Oltcit was also sold in France under the name Citroën Axel. The Oltcit Club 12 TRS model was exported to Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Colombia, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. About 200,000 cars were produced between 1981 and 1993, of which 60,000 were exported under the name Axel. After 1989, the factory in Craiova was renamed Automobile Craiova after Citroën sold its stake in Oltcit to the Romanian State in 1991. In 1994, the Koreans from Daewoo took over the Craiova factory and produced the last Oltcit off the production line under the name Oltena in 1996.
