Is the 2015 Porsche 981 Boxster S the perfect car for conquering the mountain passes and canyons of the French Alps? I set out to find out — starting in Nice, I drove one of the most thrilling routes in southern France, chasing curves, elevation, and springtime scenery in this mid-engine Porsche roadster. My journey began with the legendary Col de Turini, famed for its Monte Carlo Rally history. From there, I connected to the twisty and scenic D68, a driver’s delight with endless switchbacks. Next came the jaw-dropping Red Rock Road (D2202), a surreal drive through the deep red gorges of the Gorges de Daluis. Finally, I climbed the breathtaking Col de la Cayolle, one of the highest passes in the region, before descending into the alpine village of Barcelonnette. With the 981 Boxster’s flat-six howl, razor-sharp handling, and top-down freedom, this drive was about more than roads — it was about finding the soul of a true driver’s car. About Porsche 981

The Porsche 981 is the internal designation given to the third-generation Boxster/Cayman (second generation Cayman) models built by German automobile manufacturer Porsche. It was announced on 13 March 2012 at the Geneva Auto Show with sales starting early summer 2012. The 981 reflects the new design language from the 911 (991) and 918, and features revised engine and transmission specifications.
