Toyota is showing off a three-row, seven-passenger people mover called the Toyota Land Cruiser Se Concept at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, as part of an effort to signal a shift from "hybridizing everything" to "battery-electric everything." It's a huge vehicle, longer and wider than any Toyota Land Cruiser or Lexus LX600 that came before. Between the Size of a Land Cruiser and a Sequoia The first thing any automaker does when switching from combustion engine to battery-electric propulsion is expand the wheelbase (and often track width) to accommodate enough battery cells to allay buyers' concerns that they won't be able to make it to Grandma's house in their new EV. That means its 120.1-inch wheelbase is almost 8 inches longer than North America's newest Land Cruiser or its current-generation successor, the Lexus LX 600. It's only 2.3 inches longer and no wider than the LX (202.8 x 78.3 inches). The North American-focused Toyota Sequoia is still larger in every dimension. Full details of the Land Cruiser Se Concept have not been shared yet, but from the photos it appears that Toyota has not moved the windshield significantly forward as in the EPU electric pickup truck concept. The Land Cruiser Se still has a distinctive, long hood. Although a longer wheelbase makes it slightly longer, overall height drops by about 7 inches (to 67.1 inches) in the name of reduced frontal area and improved aerodynamics to increase driving range. Combine this with a likely higher floor to accommodate batteries, and it's a pretty safe bet that overall passenger space will be less than other Land Cruisers. At the very least, moving the rear wheels rearward will make access to the third row seat easier. A longer wheelbase can improve ride quality as well as compromise in terms of ramp breakage. Among the details mentioned in Toyota's show teaser press release is the fact that the Land Cruiser Se will use monocoque construction rather than the traditional body-on-frame used on most Land Cruisers. We can assume that the electric Land Cruiser will include at least two motors; but three or four engines would be better to pay homage to the brand's legendary off-road prowess.
