About Car

A car, or an automobile, is a motor vehicle with wheels. Most definitions of cars state that they run primarily on roads, seat 1-8 people, have four wheels, and mainly transport people rather than cargo. There are over 1.6 billion cars in use worldwide as of 2025. The French inventor Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built the first steam-powered road vehicle in 1769, while the Swiss inventor François Isaac de Rivaz designed and constructed the first internal combustion-powered automobile in 1808. The mode...

About This Footage

This 1955 footage of a London taxicab, specifically the Beardmore Mark 7 with license plate YPK 237, is a fascinating glimpse into the past. The clip's brevity belies its significance, offering a captivating look at a bygone era in automotive history.

The Beardmore Mark 7 itself is an intriguing vehicle. Built on a Ford 4-cylinder petrol engine and featuring a 3-speed manual gearbox with a steering column gear-stick, this taxicab was designed to meet the stringent specifications of the Public Carriage Office of the Metropolitan Police. The peculiar requirements for London cabs during this period are well-documented: the ability to carry a bale of hay as equivalent minimum luggage capacity and accommodating a gentleman's top hat inside the cab.

The Windover bodywork, constructed with aluminum panels on a timber frame and featuring a steel bonnet, is a notable aspect of this vehicle. The use of aluminum in car construction was still relatively rare at this time, making it an interesting innovation for its era. Additionally, the brakes employed components also used in the Jaguar XK120 sports car, further highlighting the connection between automotive technology and high-performance vehicles.

The fact that Beardmore sold only around 650 Mark 7 cabs before ending production in 1966 underscores the relatively limited scope of their taxicab business. This, combined with the company's history as a Glasgow shipbuilding firm and lorry chassis manufacturer, adds depth to our understanding of the industry's evolution.

The clip also highlights the importance of preservation efforts, such as the London Bus Museum's acquisition of this vehicle in 2017. Donated by Guy Marriott, YPK 237 is now part of a living heritage collection that serves as a testament to the rich history of transportation and automotive innovation.

This footage offers more than just a nostalgic look at a vintage taxicab; it provides a unique window into the design requirements, technological advancements, and industry dynamics of its time. As we continue to navigate the complexities of modern transportation, revisiting the past through preserved vehicles like YPK 237 serves as a valuable reminder of the innovations that have shaped our world.

The clip's brevity may make it seem like a brief aside from the usual fare on RedlineArchive, but its significance lies in its ability to transport viewers back in time. As we delve into the intricacies of automotive history, this 1955 London taxicab footage stands as a fascinating example of how design, technology, and industry intersected during an era of rapid change.
