During the financial crisis at the beginning of the 21st century, the company came close to bankruptcy, but has since returned to profitability. Ford is the second-largest US automaker (preceded by General Motors) and the fifth-largest in the world based on vehicle sales in 2010.[3] At the end of 2010, Ford was the fifth largest car manufacturer in Europe[4] and in Brazil in 2019.[5] Ford is the eighth US company on the Fortune 500 list, based on 2009 global revenues of $118.3 billion.[6] In 2008, Ford produced 5.532 million cars[7] and employed approximately 213,000 employees in approximately 90 factories and facilities worldwide.
