In 2022, BMW relaunched a car to celebrate the 50th anniversary of BMW M. They are celebrating with the M4 3.0 CSL, a tribute to their first M car. The BMW 3.0 CSL, which was based on the E9. It is the granddaddy of all of today's M vehicles.
In 2013, BMW laid the foundation for all their current electric models with the BMW i3 and i8. They are the first vehicles of their sub-brand "BMW i".
To this day, the best-selling BMW is the 3 Series. It all started in 1975 with the BMW 3 Series E21.
But where do the numbers come from? Starting in 1972, all BMWs were designated with numbers. 3 Series, 7 Series, 1 Series, 6 Series and also 5 Series. The 5 Series E12 was the first to get the new designation in 1972.
The myth of BMW really began with the "new class" in 1962, when BMW started to build cars for the masses.
But the "new class" was not the first BMW. In 1928 BMW took over the "Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach". The first model to come off the production line was the BMW 3/15, which was the first vehicle known as BMW.
Visually, the 3/15 did not yet resemble a BMW. That changed in 1933 with the BMW 303, the first BMW with a kidney grille and six-cylinder engine. By the way, at that time BMW also had such a large grille.
But where does the myth of unique driving dynamics and the sporty image of a BMW come from? It goes back to the BMW 02 series. The sportiest of them all was the 2002 Turbo. It had a racing engine and the first production turbocharger installed.
Funnily enough, the 02 series also included BMW's first electric vehicle. Not the i3 or i8, but the 1602 electric was the first 40 years earlier.
The 02 series was built until 1977. A year later, the BMW M1 came out. The first super sports car produced by BMW. Of him there are a total of 460 vehicles.
From the fastest BMW at the time to probably the slowest. In the post-war period Germany had little money and cars were a rarity. BMW brought out in 1955 for this purpose the BMW Isetta to mobilize the people again. With it, they immediately had a huge success.
Today, people don't want a small compact car. Everyone drives SUVs. BMW's first SUV was the X5. In 1999, BMW used it as a competitor to Mercedes ML to lay the foundation for their current SUV lineup.
Now a question: what was the first BMW M that was really popular among the masses? The E30 M3. It was launched in 1986 and was immediately a huge success due to its motorsport successes.
Most people probably don't even know about a desirable BMW either. In fact, the BMW 507 Convertible is so sought after that it is probably the most expensive BMW of all today. Even more expensive than a Mercedes 300 SL, the one with the gullwing doors.
Finally, change. In 2014, BMW unfortunately brought out their first car with front-wheel drive and a transverse engine. The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer.
