BMW's first post-war car was demonstrated at the 1951 Frankfurt Motor Show. Great hopes were placed on it; during the difficult period after World War II, the company was going through difficult years, a lot of money was spent on restoring the enterprise, which could not but affect the appearance and technical equipment of the car. Despite the fact that production of the 501 and 502 models was discontinued in 1958, cars on the same platform with various variations were produced until 1963. After the end of the war, BMW was in an extremely difficult situation: destroyed factories and a ban on car production brought the company to the brink of death. However, having begun restoration with the production of tableware, and then household appliances and bicycles, the company in 1948 received permission from the United States to produce motorcycles. The next step was to resume car production, but here three opposing approaches collided. Kurt Donath Kurt Donath, who is also BMW's technical director and director of the Milbertshofen plant, believed that producing its own cars in the current situation was not the best option for the company. He tried to negotiate with Ford and Simca in order to obtain a license to manufacture cars, and with it the production equipment. Alfreda Boening While Kurt Donath was busy searching for a suitable car to begin licensed production, Alfred Beuning, who was the company's chief engineer, was busy developing a prototype of a small, economical car that would be powered by a motorcycle engine. The prototype was designated BMW 331 and was equipped with a 600 cm3 motorcycle engine, a 4-speed gearbox and rear axle drive. The car was designed by Peter Szymanowski and looked like a miniature copy of the BMW 327. Hans Grewenig The BMW 331 prototype was presented to the company's management for approval and production, but the company's commercial director Hans Grewenig vetoed the project. Grewenig believed that the company's small production facilities were best suited for the production of luxury cars, where they could combine low production volumes and high profit margins per car produced. To this end, a team of engineers and designers was tasked with developing the car that would become the BMW 501. Production of cars under the designations 501 and 502 was discontinued in 1958, model 501 was renamed BMW 2.6, and model 502 BMW 2.6 Luxus. Production of these cars continued until 1961. During this time, only two fundamentally important changes were made to the design: in 1959, power steering appeared on the car, and in 1960, front disc brakes were added. In 1961 the line was again renamed BMW 2600 and BMW 2600L respectively. The 2600L engine was upgraded and now produced 110 horsepower. Production was discontinued in 1963. In 1955, four cars with a 3.2-liter engine producing 120 horsepower were presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show. One of these cars was the BMW 3.2, a further development of the 502. In 1957, the BMW 3.2S appeared with a 140 hp engine. In 1961, the cars were renamed BMW 3200S and 3200L. The 3200L received a 140 hp engine, and the engine installed on the 3200S could produce 160 hp. at 5600 rpm.
