SOUNDBITE: (Amharic) Tadesse Tessema, Owner of Holland Cars "I was exporting Ladas and other cars to be used as taxis in Addis Ababa but the vehicles were up to 22 years old. In Holland people pay to get rid of cars like these but I was exporting them to Ethiopia and I felt like I was using my homeland as a dumping ground. Whenever I arrived at the port with these cars I was ashamed of myself. So I thought that maybe I could start my own assembly line making cars here in Ethiopia." 4. Various car assembly plant 5. SOUNDBITE: (Amharic) Haimanot Shume, Mechanic and Holland Car employee "Since I was a child I dreamed of being a mechanic, I asked myself why I can't be better than men at this job, I think women are better at this kind of thing as we are more responsible and the quality of our work is better." 7. SOUNDBITE: (Amharic) Tadesse Tessema, Owner Holland Cars "Ethiopia has a very bad image abroad. People only see the country as having droughts and hungry people - they don't think about technology existing here. When people, like me, living abroad talk about starting up businesses like this in Ethiopia - they ask us why are you doing that? They think there is not even food in Ethiopia. This really amazes me and I think that by opening this car assembly plant - I can help to change people's views." 11. Various Tiblest Asgedom, Planning and Policy Department, Ministry of Transport and Communications 12. SOUNDBITE: (Amharic) Tiblest Asgedom, Planning and Policy Department, Ministry of Transport and Communications "We support Holland Cars' strategy to minimise environmental pollution in Addis, the city is very polluted and so we support his idea to use LPG Liquefied Petroleum Gas." 13. Various Anteneh Tamiru, Holland Car Customer 14. SOUNDBITE: (Amharic) Anteneh Tamiru, Holland Car Customer "I wanted to buy something locally produced with easy access to spare parts, good mileage, comfortable and fuel efficient. When I started driving the car around the city, people would wave at me and I'd wave back. But then I started realising that they weren't waving at me, they were waving at the car because they're so proud it's Ethiopian!" 15. Various Tadesse Tessema, Owner Holland Cars, driving out of factory LEAD IN : Ethiopia's known as a mass producer of such commodities as coffee and leather, but one ambitious Ethiopian is introducing a new idea to the country. About Car

A car, or an automobile, is a motor vehicle with wheels. Most definitions of cars state that they run primarily on roads, seat 1-8 people, have four wheels, and mainly transport people rather than cargo. There are over 1.6 billion cars in use worldwide as of 2025. The French inventor Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built the first steam-powered road vehicle in 1769, while the Swiss inventor François Isaac de Rivaz designed and constructed the first internal combustion-powered automobile in 1808. About This Footage

The 2007 clip "Ethiopian-assembled cars sparks pride in local business" is a fascinating piece of footage that showcases the entrepreneurial spirit of Tadesse Tessema, owner of Holland Cars, as he attempts to revolutionize the automotive industry in Ethiopia. The five-minute and fifty-one-second video provides an intimate look at the assembly plant, where employees are busy working on various car models, including the 'DOCC' car.

What makes this footage notable is not only the novelty of a local business assembling cars in Ethiopia but also the personal story behind it. Tadesse Tessema's decision to start his own assembly line was driven by his desire to create jobs and contribute to the country's economic growth, rather than relying on importing outdated vehicles from abroad. The owner's pride in his venture is palpable as he shares his vision with the camera.

The clip also highlights the human side of the story, showcasing the employees who work at the plant, including Haimanot Shume, a mechanic who expresses her passion for the job and her confidence in being better than men at it. Her comments offer a glimpse into the cultural nuances of Ethiopia, where women are increasingly taking on more roles in the workforce.

Furthermore, the footage provides an interesting commentary on the global perception of Ethiopia. Tadesse Tessema's experiences with people abroad who view his business venture as unusual or even absurd due to their preconceived notions about the country's economic situation is a telling example of how external perceptions can influence local initiatives. By opening his assembly plant, he aims to challenge these stereotypes and demonstrate that technology and innovation are indeed present in Ethiopia.

The clip also touches on issues related to trade and commerce, as Tadesse Tessema explains why he chose to start his own assembly line instead of relying on imported vehicles. His concerns about the environmental impact of exporting outdated cars from developed countries to developing nations like Ethiopia is a pressing issue that warrants attention.

In conclusion, this 2007 clip offers a unique perspective on the automotive industry in Ethiopia and highlights the entrepreneurial spirit of Tadesse Tessema, who is determined to create jobs and contribute to his country's economic growth. The footage provides an intimate look at the assembly plant, showcasing the employees who work there and offering insights into the cultural nuances of Ethiopia.

However, it's worth noting that this clip does not provide any information about the car itself, its specifications, or its performance. It focuses more on the human aspect of the story, highlighting the struggles and aspirations of Tadesse Tessema and his employees as they work to establish a local automotive industry in Ethiopia.
