China Is Quietly Destroying Japanese Car Brands

For over 50 years, Japanese car brands like Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, and Daihatsu have dominated the roads of Indonesia and the broader Southeast Asian market, controlling around 70 percent of the total automotive industry. This dominance was not built on having the most advanced cars but on a deep ecosystem of factories, trained mechanics, repair shops, and spare parts availability that gave consumers no reason to switch. Seven out of every ten cars on Indonesian roads are Japanese, and that trust was baked in over half a century. But a quiet revolution is now underway. China has entered the electric vehicle market with a completely different playbook, leveraging control over the entire supply chain from nickel mining and battery cell production to final showroom sales. With companies like BYD selling 4.6 million units in 2025 and overtaking Tesla in global EV sales, Chinese car imports surpassed Japanese imports for the first time in history in February 2026. In Indonesia, all ten best-selling electric cars came from Chinese brands, while Japanese manufacturers offered almost no affordable EV options. The Indonesian automotive market, the largest in Southeast Asia, holds about 60 percent of the world's nickel reserves, making it a critical battleground in the global EV transition. Yet Japan is not standing still. Toyota is investing heavily in hydrogen fuel cell technology, partnering with Chinese companies like First Automotive Works, Dongfeng, Beijing Automotive, and Guangzhou Automobile through a joint venture based in Beijing. Experts from the Bandung Institute of Technology and Gaikindo suggest that rather than a total replacement, the automotive industry is heading toward a new balance where legacy brands adopt modern technology while Chinese EVs capture the growing electric segment. Whether this marks the end of the Japanese car era or the beginning of a broader industrial transformation is a question that will shape the next 30 years of manufacturing.
