About FAW Tianjin

Tianjin FAW Xiali Automobile Co., Ltd. was an automobile company based in Tianjin, China and a subsidiary of FAW Group. Its principal activity was the design, development, manufacture and distribution of automobiles sold under the Xiali, Vita and Junpai marques. It was listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. Tianjin FAW was founded in 1965 and was originally considered one of the "three smalls" of the Chinese automotive industry, together with Guangzhou Honda and Beijing. Tianjin FAW moved into third place in the Chinese market in 1997. By 2000 they were in second place, in spite of the low quality of their products. Production volumes were high because many towns used Xiali cars as taxicabs. Many of the smaller towns in rural China had Xiali cars as taxicabs well into the second decade of the twenty-first century. Xiali parts were cheap and it was one of the cheapest cars to run in China. Due to their low running costs, Xiali cars in many towns survived as unofficial "black" taxies till well after they were replaced by other cars as legal taxies. Tianjin FAW subsequently lost market share to several new Chinese automobile manufacturers.

FAW Tianjin — Rare Footage & Clips

The FAW Tianjin, a stalwart of China's automotive industry, has a storied history that spans over five decades. Founded in 1965, this Tianjin-based manufacturer was once considered one of the "three smalls" of the Chinese market, alongside Guangzhou Honda and Beijing. However, as we delve into the archives of RedlineArchive, it becomes clear that FAW Tianjin's significance extends far beyond its domestic market.

One of the most fascinating aspects of FAW Tianjin is its impact on China's rural landscape. In many smaller towns, Xiali cars – one of the marques produced by FAW Tianjin – were ubiquitous as unofficial "black" taxis. These vehicles, with their low running costs and affordable parts, became a staple of rural transportation. Even after they were replaced by newer models as official taxis, many Xialis continued to ply their trade on China's roads.

This phenomenon is not only a testament to the ingenuity of Chinese entrepreneurs but also a reflection of the country's rapid economic growth in the late 20th century. As China opened up to global trade and investment, its automotive industry experienced a period of unprecedented expansion. FAW Tianjin was at the forefront of this trend, moving from third place in the Chinese market to second by 2000.

However, as we examine the clips from RedlineArchive's archives, it becomes clear that FAW Tianjin's significance extends beyond its commercial success. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Xiali cars were a common sight on China's roads, particularly in rural areas where they served as a vital mode of transportation for locals. These vehicles may not have been the most glamorous or sophisticated, but they played a crucial role in connecting communities and facilitating economic growth.

One clip from our archives shows a fleet of Xialis parked outside a rural town's main square, their bright colors and cheerful grilles a stark contrast to the drab surroundings. The scene is quintessentially Chinese, with locals milling about, chatting and laughing as they go about their daily business. It's a moment that captures the essence of FAW Tianjin's contribution to China's automotive industry – not just as a manufacturer, but as a facilitator of social change.

In fact, one could argue that FAW Tianjin's impact on Chinese society is comparable to its influence on the country's music scene. While there may be no direct connection between the two, it's worth noting that the 1990s and early 2000s were a time of great creativity and innovation in Chinese popular music. Artists like Cui Jian and Faye Wong were pushing the boundaries of what was possible with Chinese rock and pop, creating a new generation of fans who craved more than just traditional folk or classical music.

In this context, FAW Tianjin's Xiali cars can be seen as a symbol of China's rapidly changing cultural landscape. Just as these vehicles brought people together, facilitating communication and connection between rural communities, Chinese popular music was bringing people together in new ways – through shared experiences, emotions, and values.

Of course, this is purely speculative, and there may not be any direct correlation between FAW Tianjin and China's music scene. However, it's clear that both the Xiali car and Chinese popular music played a significant role in shaping the country's cultural identity during this period.

As we continue to explore the archives of RedlineArchive, one thing becomes increasingly clear: FAW Tianjin's impact on China's automotive industry extends far beyond its commercial success. Its vehicles may not have been the most sophisticated or glamorous, but they played a vital role in connecting communities and facilitating economic growth. And as we reflect on this period in Chinese history, it's clear that FAW Tianjin will always be remembered as a pioneering force in China's automotive industry – a testament to the country's rapid progress and its ability to adapt and innovate in the face of changing circumstances.
