About Amphicar

The Amphicar Model 770 is an amphibious automobile which was launched at the 1961 New York Auto Show. It was made in West Germany and marketed from 1961 to 1968, with production ceasing in 1965. Designed by Hans Trippel, the amphibious vehicle was manufactured by the Quandt Group at Lübeck and at Berlin-Borsigwalde, with a total of 3,878 manufactured in a single generation. The name Amphicar is a portmanteau of "amphibious" and "car". A spiritual descendant of the Volkswagen Schwimmwagen, and the Trippel SG6, the Amphicar offered only modest performance compared to most contemporary boats or cars, featured navigation lights and flag as mandated by the US Coast Guard – and after operation in water, required greasing at 13 points, one of which required removal of the rear seat. In 2014, the publication Petrolicious described the Amphicar as "good for one thing: fun. It's not quick or flashy, but it's iconic, unique and friendly.

Amphicar — Rare Footage & Clips

The Amphicar Model 770 - a vehicle that defies categorization, bridging the gap between land and water with its amphibious capabilities. Launched at the 1961 New York Auto Show, this German-made car was designed to be more than just a mode of transportation; it was an experience. With only modest performance compared to contemporary boats or cars, the Amphicar's appeal lies in its uniqueness and friendliness.

A clip from our archive shows an Amphicar navigating through calm waters, its navigation lights and flag proudly displayed as mandated by the US Coast Guard. The footage captures the Amphicar's ability to seamlessly transition between land and water, a testament to its amphibious design. While not quick or flashy, the Amphicar's iconic status is undeniable.

The Amphicar's design roots can be traced back to the Volkswagen Schwimmwagen and the Trippel SG6, both of which share similarities with this amphibious vehicle. However, it was Hans Trippel who brought the Amphicar to life, crafting a car that could not only traverse land but also navigate through water. The Quandt Group's manufacturing efforts at Lübeck and Berlin-Borsigwalde resulted in a total of 3,878 units produced during its single generation.

The Amphicar's amphibious capabilities were certainly one of its most significant features. However, it was not without its quirks. After operation in water, the vehicle required greasing at 13 points, with one of those points requiring the removal of the rear seat. This added layer of maintenance may have been a drawback for some owners, but it only adds to the Amphicar's charm.

In 2014, Petrolicious described the Amphicar as "good for one thing: fun." This assessment is spot on. The Amphicar is not about speed or performance; it's an experience waiting to happen. Its unique blend of land and water capabilities makes it a true standout in the world of cars.

Interestingly, while there may be no direct connection between the Amphicar and music history, its amphibious nature has drawn comparisons to the likes of Frank Sinatra, who was known for his love of boats and the sea. While this is purely speculative, it highlights the Amphicar's ability to evoke emotions and spark imagination.

The Amphicar's impact on car culture cannot be overstated. Its innovative design and capabilities paved the way for future amphibious vehicles. However, its influence extends beyond the automotive world as well. The Amphicar's unique blend of form and function has captivated designers and engineers across various industries, inspiring new ideas and innovations.

A clip from our archive shows an Amphicar navigating through a busy harbor, effortlessly gliding past larger vessels. This footage captures the Amphicar's ability to operate in tight spaces, making it an ideal vehicle for those who live near water or enjoy boating as a hobby.

The Amphicar's production run may have been relatively short-lived, ceasing in 1965 after only eight years on the market. However, its legacy lives on through the countless enthusiasts and collectors who continue to admire and restore these unique vehicles.

In many ways, the Amphicar represents the ultimate symbol of freedom and adventure. Its ability to traverse land and water makes it an ideal vehicle for those who crave excitement and exploration. Whether cruising down a coastal highway or navigating through calm waters, the Amphicar is sure to put a smile on your face.

The Amphicar's significance extends beyond its unique capabilities as well. It represents a bygone era of innovation and experimentation in the automotive world. A time when manufacturers were willing to push boundaries and challenge conventional wisdom.

As we delve deeper into our archive, we find more footage of the Amphicar in action. One clip shows an Amphicar being driven onto a boat lift, its tires rolling off as it transitions from land to water. This footage captures the Amphicar's ability to seamlessly adapt to different environments, making it an ideal vehicle for those who live near water or enjoy boating.

The Amphicar's impact on car culture is also evident in its influence on future designs. Its innovative use of materials and engineering has inspired new ideas and innovations across various industries. While its production run may have been relatively short-lived, the Amphicar's legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.

In conclusion, the Amphicar Model 770 is a true icon in the world of cars. Its unique blend of land and water capabilities makes it an experience waiting to happen. Whether cruising down a coastal highway or navigating through calm waters, the Amphicar is sure to put a smile on your face.
