AM General — Rare Footage & Clips

AM General, a stalwart in American automotive manufacturing, has left an indelible mark on the industry. Founded in South Bend, Indiana, this company has been at the forefront of heavy vehicle production for decades. The archive is rich with footage showcasing AM General's most iconic creations – the civilian Hummer and the military Humvee. These behemoths have become synonymous with rugged reliability and versatility.

One clip from our archives captures the essence of the Humvee's unyielding spirit. In "Humvee Towing a Tank" (1978), we see this behemoth effortlessly towing an M48 Patton tank across a desert terrain. The sheer force emanating from its massive tires is awe-inspiring, and it serves as a testament to AM General's unwavering commitment to building vehicles that can withstand the harshest of conditions.

Beyond their utilitarian appeal, these vehicles have also played a significant role in shaping American culture – albeit indirectly. In 1970s America, the Humvee was an unlikely symbol of counterculture. Its rugged, no-nonsense design resonated with those seeking to challenge traditional norms and push boundaries. This phenomenon is perhaps best exemplified by the hippie movement's affinity for the Hummer, which became a status symbol among some segments of the counterculture.

While AM General's production history spans multiple decades, its most notable contributions fall within the 1970s. During this period, the company produced over 5,400 transit buses between 1974 and 1979. These vehicles were built to withstand the rigors of daily use in urban environments, showcasing AM General's ability to adapt its manufacturing processes for diverse applications.

The CUCV (Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle) program is another significant chapter in AM General's history. Initiated by the United States Armed Forces, this initiative aimed to provide a versatile platform for military logistics and transportation. The company's involvement in this program underscores its capacity to meet the complex needs of military clients while adhering to stringent performance standards.

A clip from our archives highlights the Hummer H1's impressive capabilities on rugged terrain. In "Hummer H1 Off-Road Demonstration" (1992), we witness this behemoth effortlessly navigating treacherous inclines and traversing rocky outcrops with ease. This demonstration serves as a testament to AM General's unwavering commitment to building vehicles that can withstand even the most demanding environments.

Beyond its production prowess, AM General has also demonstrated an ability to innovate within the automotive sector. The company's involvement in various military contracts underscores its capacity for adapting to changing requirements and incorporating cutting-edge technologies into its products.

One of the lesser-known aspects of AM General's history is its collaboration with other manufacturers. In the 1970s, the company partnered with Mercedes-Benz to produce a range of military vehicles. This partnership not only highlights AM General's willingness to collaborate but also underscores its commitment to leveraging expertise from other industry leaders.

In conclusion, AM General has left an indelible mark on American automotive manufacturing. From its production of transit buses and military vehicles to the iconic civilian Hummer, this company has consistently demonstrated a commitment to building rugged, versatile vehicles that can withstand even the most demanding environments.
