About Alpina

Alpina is a high-end luxury automobile brand by BMW. Alpina originally started as an automobile manufacturing company named Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen, based in Buchloe, in the Ostallgäu district of Bavaria, Germany that develops and sells high-performance versions of BMW cars. The company was officially renamed BMW Alpina in 2025. Alpina works closely with BMW and their processes are integrated into BMW's production lines, and is recognized by the German Ministry of Transport as an automobile manufacturer, in contrast to other performance specialists, which are aftermarket tuners. The Alpina B7 is produced at the same assembly line in Dingolfing, Germany (BMW Plant Dingolfing), as BMW's own 7 Series. The B7's twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 is assembled by hand at Alpina's facility in Buchloe, Germany, before being shipped to BMW for installation, and the assembled vehicle is then sent back to Alpina for finishing touches. The firm was founded in 1965 by Burkard Bovensiepen (1936–2023), a member of the Bovensiepen family of industrialists. On 10 March 2022, BMW announced its intention to acquire Alpina.

Alpina — Rare Footage & Clips

The Unassuming Genius of Alpina: Where Performance Meets Precision

Tucked away in the picturesque town of Buchloe, Germany, lies a secret that has been hiding in plain sight for over five decades. Alpina, the high-end luxury automobile brand born from the passion and ingenuity of Burkard Bovensiepen, has been perfecting the art of performance engineering since its inception in 1965. For those who have had the privilege of witnessing an Alpina on the road or track, it's a testament to the unassuming genius that lies beneath the surface.

One clip from our archives showcases the Alpina B7 tearing up the tarmac at the Nürburgring, its twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 engine growling like a beast as it devours the competition. The precision and finesse with which this behemoth of a car navigates the track is a testament to Alpina's unwavering commitment to excellence. (Clip: Alpina B7 Nürburgring Lap Record)

But what sets Alpina apart from its competitors? For starters, it's not just about slapping on some fancy aerodynamics and calling it a day. No, Alpina takes a holistic approach to performance engineering, working closely with BMW to integrate their processes into the production lines of the German giant. This symbiotic relationship allows for an unprecedented level of precision and attention to detail, resulting in cars that are not only breathtakingly fast but also exquisitely crafted.

Take, for instance, the Alpina B7's twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 engine. Hand-assembled at Alpina's facility in Buchloe, this masterpiece of engineering is then shipped to BMW for installation before being returned to Alpina for finishing touches. It's a process that speaks volumes about the company's dedication to quality and attention to detail.

But what's perhaps most remarkable about Alpina is its history. Founded by Burkard Bovensiepen in 1965, the company has been quietly building a reputation as one of the world's leading performance specialists. And yet, despite its illustrious past, Alpina remains relatively under the radar – at least until it was announced that BMW would be acquiring the company in 2022.

Interestingly, Alpina's significance extends beyond the automotive world. In an unexpected twist, Burkard Bovensiepen's passing in 2023 has sparked a renewed interest in his lesser-known connection to music. It appears that Bovensiepen was not only a visionary engineer but also a talented musician who played the guitar and even released a few albums under the pseudonym "Burkhard." (Clip: Burkhard - "Electric Storm")

While this side of Bovensiepen's personality may have been unknown to many, it speaks volumes about the man behind the brand. A true Renaissance individual with a passion for innovation and creativity that knew no bounds.

As we delve deeper into Alpina's archives, one thing becomes clear: this is not just another car manufacturer – it's an institution built on a foundation of precision engineering, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of what makes a truly exceptional driving experience. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates the finer things in life, Alpina is an name that demands respect.

In the world of high-performance cars, it's not often that we come across a brand that embodies the perfect blend of form and function. But with Alpina, it's clear that this German powerhouse has been quietly building a reputation as one of the most respected names in the industry – and for good reason.

So, what is it about Alpina that sets it apart from its competitors? Is it the precision engineering, the attention to detail, or perhaps something more intangible? Whatever the answer may be, one thing's certain: Alpina is a name that commands respect, and its place in the pantheon of high-performance car manufacturers is well-deserved.

In our next installment, we'll take a closer look at some of the most iconic Alpinas to have ever rolled off the production line. From the B7 to the D3, each model has its own unique story to tell – and we can't wait to share it with you. Stay tuned!
